Aránzazu del Campo is Scientific Director of INM-Leibniz Institute for New Materials and Professor for Materials Synthesis at Saarland University (Germany) since 2015. She has pioneered the use of light to regulate the interactions between cells and materials and to guide cellular fate. Combining synthetic phototriggers and optogenetic approaches with hydrogels and 3D bioprinted scaffolds, her group recreates cellular microenvironments that capture the dynamic and multifaceted exchange between cells and with the natural scaffold in relevant medical scenarios like cellular migration, angiogenesis, or immunoregulation.
Ar’anzazudel Campo studied Chemistry and obtained her PhD in Polymer Sciences at the Instituto de Ciencia y Tecnologia de Polimeros (Madrid, Spain). After two postdoctoral stays in Germany and Italy, she become group leader in 2004 at the Max-Planck Institute for Metal Research and started working in the field of bioinspired materials. In 2009 she obtained the Minerva Grant from the Max Planck Society. She moved to the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz and initiated her research in the field of biomedical materials.
